My dad was the same way. He talked bad things about me and the rest of my siblings even after we grew up and became adults. It seemed like he couldn't say anything good about us because it went against his nature.
ReplyDeleteI know of other kids with such parents. It maybe because he had such parents who did him the same way. We learn parenting by examples. Don't let it affect you. He is who he is. I am sure you are probably a good person with some flaws just like all the rest of us--your father included. He just chooses to focus on the flaws and not recognize your good characteristics. I would like to say I didn't do this to my kids, but again we learn parenting from our parents and unfortunately I spoke bad at times of my kids. I do regret it.
What should I do if my father constantly puts me down?
ReplyDeleteAvoid your father as much as possible with the realization that your father has deep issues of his own that you will never be able to fix.
Do your best not to internalize is put downs. If you ever hear your own voice speaking conclusions about his words, acknowledge your recognition of his voice in your head. After acknowledging that recognition replace those negative thoughts and conclusions with truthful thoughts and conclusions. For example, if that voice tells you that you are a worthless failure, catch yourself thinking it and then say, “no that is not true. I may fail at times like everybody else, but that does not make me worthless or define me as a failure.”
Fight with all that is in you hatred, bitterness or resentment towards your father. Hating or being angry at your father all the time will do nothing to change your father, but it will either make you more like him, an abusive person, or you will turn that abuse upon yourself and at the very least live in constant depression. I truly believe that depression is just another form of anger but turned inward rather than outward. Hurting people do hurt people. Extroverts tend to hurt people around them and introverts tend to hurt the person inside them.
Write a letter to your dad telling him how much he is hurting you with his words. If you are really angry at him then express it in that letter. Then write another letter and take out the parts that express criticism or anger towards your father. The first letter is for you to release your feelings into words. The second letter is for your father, to give him a chance to do the right thing and to perhaps initiate a conversation with you about the matter. You know your dad. Some men are simply oppressors whose private demons cause them to lash out at others at all times. Others are reasonable men stuck in a pattern of behavior they themselves detest. Use your best discernment to figure out which kind of dad you have. One clue might be, do you have times when you feel genuine love from your father? Such a man may be able to be reasoned with.
Look for other role models or surrogate fathers. I once had a customer who was 80 something years old, about the right age to be my father . My own dad did not know how to be a good father or be a good example for me his son. But this man was so kind to me and so complimentary of the work that I did for him that I experienced a sort of healing through my association with him. You may know relatives like this or a friend of some friends or a pastor in your neighborhood. I myself turn to God as my father, an ultimate Father who always has my best interest in mind.
Be aware of how you treat others. If you find yourself treating others the same way your father treats you, then know that you are allowing your resentment towards your dad to become a part of your internal world. If you are a doormat wherever you go and in all of your relationships, once again your father's abuse may be affecting you. Learn to be assertive, neither too aggressive nor to passive.
